The decision comes as continuous rain has lashed Mumbai and surrounding districts over the past few days, with weather conditions expected to worsen on Monday.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai has been placed under an Orange Alert, indicating the possibility of heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds.
In view of the weather forecast, the BMC has directed all government, private, municipal-aided schools and colleges in Mumbai to remain closed on Monday to ensure the safety of students.
While educational institutions will remain shut, the civic body clarified that government and private offices across the city will continue to function as usual.
Heavy rainfall has also affected several districts along the Konkan coast, including Palghar, Mumbai, Mumbai Suburban, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, where continuous showers have been reported.
The BMC has appealed to residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel unless absolutely essential. The advisory was issued through the civic body’s public relations department as the city prepares for another spell of intense rainfall.
Earlier, as a precautionary measure, schools, colleges and anganwadis in Thane and Palghar districts were closed on July 4 due to heavy rain. With the monsoon continuing to intensify, Mumbai has now taken a similar step to reduce risks for students.
Authorities have urged citizens to follow official weather updates and safety advisories as the city remains on alert for heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours.
