The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is considering this step to make sure the available water lasts until the monsoon arrives. Officials say it is a precautionary move to avoid a bigger crisis later.
At present, the seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai are at only about 33.6% capacity. This has raised concerns about how long the current reserves will last.
Major lakes like Bhatsa Lake, Tansa Lake, Vaitarna Lake and Modak Sagar are seeing steady drops in water levels. The ongoing heat is also increasing evaporation, while daily demand remains high.
Mumbai needs nearly 4,000 million litres of water every day. Managing this supply has become more challenging due to the current weather conditions.
Adding to the concern is the possibility of below-normal rainfall, which is being linked to the El Niño effect. This could delay the arrival of the monsoon and slow down the refill of reservoirs.
To deal with the situation, authorities are looking at alternative water sources and are also asking residents to use water carefully.
The planned cut is meant to keep supply stable in the coming weeks. Officials say this step can help avoid a more serious shortage if the heat continues and rains are delayed.
