The incident took place at around 3 am, when most residents were asleep. A large amount of soil and rocks suddenly came down from the hillside and hit two to three houses in the area.
The collapse occurred in the Ashok Nagar area between Ghatkopar and Sakinaka, within the jurisdiction of Ghatkopar Police Station.
As soon as authorities were alerted, teams from the Fire Brigade and NDRF reached the site along with police personnel. Rescue operations were launched immediately to search through the debris and locate anyone who may have been trapped.
Local residents said the sudden collapse caused panic in the neighbourhood. Initial information suggested that around five to six people could have been trapped inside the affected houses, although officials were still assessing the situation.
A large crowd gathered near the site as rescue teams continued their operation. Authorities also began taking steps to restrict access to the affected area and prevent further risk to residents.
The incident has also raised concerns about the safety of homes located close to the hillside. Officials said residents in the area had reportedly been issued notices before the monsoon season. Authorities are expected to review the situation and decide what further action needs to be taken regarding the residents living in the vulnerable area.
The Mumbai civic administration has announced financial assistance of ₹3 lakh for the families of those who died in the incident.
Mayor Ritu Tawde also visited the site and inspected the rescue operation.
Rescue teams continued searching the debris as officials worked to determine the full extent of the damage and confirm whether anyone else remained trapped.
