The recovery was made under Special Search Operation-3, launched to crack down on the rising number of mobile phone thefts during railway journeys.
Every day, millions of passengers travel on Mumbai’s local trains and long-distance services. Taking advantage of crowded coaches and stations, thieves often target commuters and steal their mobile phones.
According to officials, Railway Police Commissioner M. Rakesh Kalasagar made mobile theft cases a priority after taking charge. The operation focused on solving cases registered in 2024, 2025, and between January and June 2026.
Police teams used IMEI-based tracking, digital surveillance, technical analysis, and support from the cyber cell to trace the stolen devices. Several mobile phones had been taken to other states, and they were recovered with the help of local police authorities through interstate coordination.
After completing the required legal procedures, all recovered phones were returned to their original owners.
Speaking about the operation, Commissioner M. Rakesh Kalasagar said protecting passengers and their belongings remains the Railway Police’s top priority. He credited the success of the operation to the effective use of technology, cyber investigation, and coordination with police departments in other states.
The recovered mobile phones were handed over to their owners during a special event held at the Railway Police Headquarters in Ghatkopar. Many people expressed their gratitude after receiving their phones back, especially because they were able to recover their valuable personal data along with the devices.
