Mumbai: Police have arrested a 30-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing a passenger inside a Mumbai local train, ending a massive search operation that lasted nearly 15 hours.

The accused, identified as Roshan Suvarna, was taken into custody from Panvel railway station on Wednesday afternoon. Investigators were able to trace him using CCTV footage and technical evidence collected from multiple locations across the suburban railway network.

The victim, 22-year-old Mayank Lohar, was attacked inside the first-class compartment of a Churchgate-Nalasopara fast local train. After the incident, the accused allegedly got off the train near Platform No. 6 at Borivali station and disappeared into the crowd.

Roshan Suvarna is a resident of Mira Road and works for a cargo handling company near Mumbai Airport in Andheri. His father and elder brother are also employed by the same company. According to police, he had no previous criminal record.

During questioning, Suvarna reportedly told investigators that he had consumed a large quantity of alcohol after finishing work on Tuesday evening. He initially planned to return home by taxi from Andheri East but later decided to travel by local train due to heavy rain and the lack of available cabs.

To identify the suspect, police launched an extensive investigation and examined footage from nearly 400 CCTV cameras located at railway stations and surrounding areas between Churchgate and Nalasopara.

A major breakthrough came when officers noticed a company logo on the T-shirt worn by the suspect in the CCTV footage. This clue helped investigators identify the company where he worked. Police then collected details about his address, family members and mobile number.

Using mobile location data and technical surveillance, investigators tracked his movements after he left Borivali. During the investigation, police learned that he had booked a bus ticket to travel to his native place in Mangaluru.

A police team quickly reached Panvel railway station before he could leave. At around 2 pm, officers found him waiting there and took him into custody. He was later brought to Borivali Railway Police Station, where he was formally arrested in connection with the murder case.

According to police sources, after being detained, Suvarna repeatedly asked about the condition of the injured passenger. Initially, officers told him that the victim was receiving treatment at a hospital.

However, while in custody, he reportedly searched online and came across news reports stating that Mayank Lohar had died. To avoid complications during the transfer back to Mumbai, police allegedly told him that the reports were inaccurate. It was only after reaching Borivali Police Station that he was officially informed about the victim’s death and his arrest in the murder case.

The investigation is ongoing, and police are continuing to examine all aspects of the incident.
