The decision comes after repeated complaints from passengers about the wide gap between local trains and platforms, which has been a safety concern for years.
The approved work will be carried out at Byculla, Dadar, Kurla, Mulund, Thane, Mankhurd, and Kalwa stations. Once completed, the project is expected to make boarding and alighting safer, especially for senior citizens, children, and passengers with mobility issues.
The issue gained attention after reports highlighted the risks posed by the large gap between trains and platforms at several Central Railway stations. Following this, the Divisional Railway Manager directed officials to examine the problem and take corrective measures.
Railway officials have confirmed that the proposal has been approved and work on raising the platform heights will begin soon.
Passengers, however, have questioned why only seven stations have been included in the first phase. Many major stations across the Central Railway network continue to have similar safety concerns.
Commuters have urged the railway authorities to conduct a comprehensive survey and prepare a time-bound plan to address the problem across all stations instead of limiting the work to a few locations.
Meanwhile, railway services on the Western Railway were disrupted for several hours on Monday after a Virar-Bharuch MEMU train derailed near Bhilad station in Gujarat.
The derailment affected train movement on the down line, delaying several mail, express, superfast, passenger, and MEMU services travelling towards Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Delhi. Trains heading towards Mumbai were also delayed by one to two hours.
The Virar-Bharuch MEMU had departed Virar on schedule at around 4 am but derailed near Bhilad at around 6 am, causing major disruption to rail traffic. The delays affected thousands of office-goers, students, and daily commuters.
