The incident took place on the night of August 23, when the Ganpati idol procession was moving towards the festival pandal in Mazgaon. Eggs were allegedly thrown from the direction of the Continental Heights building.
One of the eggs landed on the Ganpati idol, angering devotees present at the procession. A large crowd soon gathered at the spot, leading to tension in the area.
Police immediately deployed additional personnel to prevent the situation from escalating.
A case was registered against an unidentified person under Sections 299 and 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The Byculla police formed five special teams and examined technical evidence to identify the person responsible.
The investigation led police to Danish Sher Khan, who was arrested within 36 hours.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Jayant Meena, Khan works as a delivery worker and delivers eggs received through online orders.
On the day of the incident, he had gone to the Continental Heights building to deliver an egg order. Firecrackers were reportedly being burst outside the building at the time.
During questioning, Khan allegedly told police that smoke from the firecrackers irritated his eyes and made it difficult for him to walk properly. Angry over the situation, he allegedly threw eggs towards the Ganpati arrival procession.
Police are continuing their investigation, while devotees are now awaiting further action in the case.
