A bench of Justice G S Kulkarni and Justice Neela Gokhale expressed concern over the high volume of DJs, sound systems and loudspeakers being used during festivals and public events.
The court clarified that it is not against any religion or festival. However, it said people should ensure that celebrations do not cause inconvenience to others.
The court has sought information from the Maharashtra government on the rules currently in place to control noise pollution and how effectively they are being implemented during festivals.
The state Advocate General, Milind Sathe, has been asked to provide details about the existing noise pollution rules, permissible sound levels and their implementation during the festive period.
The court also questioned whether specific guidelines have been prepared for the use of sound systems and loudspeakers at festivals and public events.
The bench pointed out that simply having rules and guidelines is not enough. The authorities must also ensure that the rules are actually followed on the ground.
The government has also been asked to inform the court about the action taken by the administration and police against those who violate the prescribed noise limits.
The matter will be heard again on Tuesday, when the state is expected to provide the requested information to the court.
