The expansion is aimed at easing overcrowding on Mumbai’s suburban railway network and increasing passenger capacity. Passengers travelling from stations such as Shahad, Ambivli, Titwala and Asangaon are expected to benefit from the longer trains.
The announcement was discussed during a public interaction organised by Central Railway’s Mumbai division at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus on Thursday. Railway officials addressed passenger concerns, including overcrowding and the need for easier access to local trains.
No New Services, but 25% More Seating Capacity
Under the plan, existing 12-coach local services on the Kasara route will be converted into 15-coach services. This means the number of train trips will not increase, but the seating capacity of the upgraded services will rise by approximately 25%.
Central Railway has been carrying out the 15-coach expansion in two phases. Following the completion of the first phase, 15-coach services were introduced on the Karjat route. Work on the Kasara route is now being expedited.
The Railway Ministry has directed authorities to operate more 15-coach suburban trains to improve passenger-carrying capacity, make boarding easier and reduce overcrowding.
Central Railway’s 15-Coach Local Expansion
Central Railway first introduced a 15-coach suburban local train on October 16, 2012, with 16 services. Six more services were added on April 4, 2019, taking the total to 22.
The number subsequently increased to 32 after 10 additional 12-coach services were converted into 15-coach trains on July 20. Another 22 services were upgraded on August 15, bringing the total to 54.
With the planned addition of 18 services in November, the total number of 15-coach local services on Central Railway will reach 72.
