Mumbai Metro: Commuters in Thane, Kalyan, Dombivli and nearby areas may soon experience smoother travel as the newly approved Mumbai Metro Line 5A is set to improve connectivity across the region.

The new metro extension will act as an important link between Metro Line 4 and Metro Line 12, helping passengers travel more easily across different parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

Heavy traffic and long travel times have remained a major challenge for daily commuters travelling towards key destinations such as Wadala and Kasarvadavali. To address this issue, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has planned stronger integration of the metro network.

Under this plan, Metro Line 5A will connect with the under-construction Metro Line 4 at Balkum and with Metro Line 12 at Kalyan. Once the network becomes operational, passengers will be able to switch between metro corridors through convenient interchange stations.

Mumbai Metro Line 5A is an extension of the under-construction Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro Line 5. The new stretch will run from Durgadi in Kalyan to Ulhasnagar and cover a distance of 11.829 km.

The corridor will pass through several important locations, including Durgadi, Khadakpada, Bhoirwadi, Shanti Nagar, Shivaji Chowk, Shivaji Path and Ulhasnagar.

With the addition of this extension, Metro Line 5 will become one of the longest metro corridors in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The existing Metro Line 5 is a 24.90-km elevated route connecting Thane, Bhiwandi and Kalyan through 15 stations.

These stations include Balkum Naka, Kasheli, Kalher, Purna, Anjurphata, Dhamankar Naka, Bhiwandi, Gopal Nagar, Temghar, Rajnouli, Gove Gaon, Kon Gaon, Lal Chowki, Kalyan Station and Kalyan APMC.

Officials expect the new metro link to significantly reduce travel time between Durgadi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar. The journey could take around 40-50 percent less time compared to travelling by road, offering faster and more reliable transportation.

The project is also expected to strengthen connectivity across the MMR by improving access between Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Ulhasnagar and surrounding areas.

With better interchange facilities and a more connected metro network, passengers will be able to travel across the region with greater convenience and fewer delays.
