Navi Mumbai’s public transport network is set for a major upgrade after the Maharashtra government approved CIDCO’s ambitious Navi Mumbai Metro expansion project.

The proposal includes the development of Metro Line 1A and Metro Line 2, which are expected to improve connectivity across the city and provide direct access to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport.

The project received approval during a meeting of the Infrastructure Committee chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

The expansion is part of the larger Mass Rapid Transit System planned under the Comprehensive Transportation Study prepared for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). After the successful launch of Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 in November 2023, CIDCO prepared a detailed project report for the next phase and submitted it to the state government.

The proposed Metro Line 1A will be a 3.2-km elevated corridor connecting CBD Belapur and Sagar Sangam. The route will have two stations and will be linked with the proposed Gold Line, also known as Metro Line 8.

This connection will allow passengers from western parts of Navi Mumbai to travel more easily to the Navi Mumbai International Airport once it becomes operational.

Metro Line 2 will be a 14.07-km corridor running between Pendhar and Navi Mumbai International Airport Terminal-4. The route will include 11 stations and is expected to improve public transport access to rapidly developing areas around the airport as well as nearby MIDC zones.

The project will also provide connectivity with Metro Line 12 at Amandoot Station in Taloja. This interchange will help commuters from Kalyan, Taloja and other eastern parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region access the metro network more conveniently.

To ensure seamless travel, Metro Lines 1A and 2 will be integrated with the existing 11-km Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1. Once completed, the combined network will create a continuous metro corridor of nearly 28 km from Sagar Sangam to Navi Mumbai International Airport.

The importance of the project has increased with the upcoming launch of the airport, which is expected to generate significant passenger traffic in the coming years.

Officials said the integrated metro network will provide better connectivity between residential, commercial, industrial and airport areas, making daily travel faster and more convenient.

The project is estimated to cost around Rs 5,575 crore. Construction is expected to begin during the financial year 2027-28, while full operations are planned by the financial year 2031-32.

CIDCO officials believe the expansion will strengthen Navi Mumbai’s transport infrastructure, support economic growth and help transform the city into a more connected and future-ready urban centre.
