Navi Mumbai International Airport is set to take on a bigger role in handling international passengers from Mumbai. Around 50 lakh passengers a year will be shifted to the new airport from October 1 as redevelopment work begins at Terminal 1 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

The north section of Mumbai airport’s Terminal 1, known as T1B, is scheduled to close for redevelopment from January 15. Around 50 lakh domestic passengers currently handled by this terminal will then be moved to Terminal 2.

Terminal 2 is currently used mainly for international flights. To create additional capacity for domestic operations at T2, an equivalent international passenger capacity will be shifted to Navi Mumbai International Airport.

Navi Mumbai airport currently has the capacity to handle around 60 lakh international passengers annually. With an additional 50 lakh passengers being shifted there, the airport will operate at around 83% of its international capacity.

At present, Navi Mumbai International Airport has one international flight operating to Abu Dhabi.

The airport’s role in international operations has also been growing. Recently, a Boeing 747 freighter operated by National Airlines arrived at Navi Mumbai airport. The arrival was seen as an indication of the airport’s potential for handling more international cargo operations.

An Airbus A330 wide-body aircraft has also arrived at the airport. The handling of large aircraft is considered significant as the airport expands its cargo operations.

With the redevelopment of Mumbai airport’s Terminal 1, Navi Mumbai International Airport is therefore expected to play a much larger role in handling both passenger and cargo traffic.
