The incident occurred at around 6:55 am, when Sakshi Gharat was reportedly trying to reach the platform by passing underneath a stationary goods train. The train suddenly started moving, causing her to lose her balance. Her backpack reportedly became caught in the train, pulling her underneath and resulting in serious injuries to both legs.
Lack of Safe Access Raises Safety Concerns
Residents on the eastern side of Saphale station reportedly face difficulties reaching the station when the railway crossing is closed. In the absence of a safe alternative route, some commuters attempt to cross the tracks or pass beneath stationary trains to reach the platform.
The accident has once again highlighted the need for a safe pedestrian crossing at the station. Local residents have repeatedly demanded the construction of a pedestrian subway, and protests have also been held over the issue. Although assurances were reportedly given, construction has yet to begin.
Following the incident, residents questioned whether railway authorities would finally act on the long-pending demand and provide a safer route for pedestrians.
Meanwhile, a Western Railway official said the goods train was stationed on the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) railway line. The official also stated that the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and railway police provided assistance to the injured woman.
