The issue began on Wednesday evening after a 1,650-mm main water pipeline developed a serious crack at Dr E Moses Road in Mahalaxmi. The pipeline, located around 15 feet underground, caused major supply cuts in several areas after the damage was detected.
Neighbourhoods including Mumbai Central, Tardeo, Agripada, Kamathipura and Saat Rasta were among the worst affected, with residents facing severe water shortage for over 48 hours.
Civic officials said repair teams worked non-stop for nearly 44 hours under difficult conditions to fix the damaged line. Around 40 engineers and workers from the hydraulic engineering department were involved in the operation.
Following the repair, water supply started resuming partially on Friday evening. Officials said normal water supply is expected to be fully restored from Saturday.
The shortage created difficulties for local residents and businesses. In Agripada, special tanker arrangements had to be made to ensure water availability at mosques for prayers during the disruption.
With repair work now completed, the city administration expects the water system in the affected areas to return to regular supply without further interruption.
