Officials from Western Railway and Central Railway are exploring this option for some of the city’s busiest routes. These include the Churchgate–Virar corridor and the CSMT–Kalyan corridor.
These routes handle some of the highest passenger volumes in the world. During peak hours, trains often run beyond capacity, making daily travel difficult for commuters.
Expanding the current railway lines on the surface has become challenging. Limited space, dense construction and high land costs are major hurdles. Because of this, authorities are now looking at underground options.
If the plan moves forward, underground local trains could work like metro systems. They may offer faster travel, better punctuality and even air-conditioned trains. Officials also believe this could help reduce overcrowding and improve overall operations.
The new corridors could separate fast and slow train services, which may ease pressure on existing lines.
However, the project is still in the early stage. Underground construction is expensive and requires large investment. So far, no final approvals or timelines have been announced.
For now, the idea is being studied as a long-term solution. If implemented, it could bring a major change to Mumbai’s daily commute.
