According to police sources, the accused, Zaib Zuber Ansari, first asked the two guards about their religion and then allegedly told them to recite the Kalma before attacking them with a knife.
The incident took place around 4 am at an under-construction building located behind Wockhardt Hospital. The two injured guards, Rajkumar Mishra and Subroto Sen, suffered serious injuries in the attack.
Despite being wounded, Mishra managed to reach the hospital on his own. Sen, however, was helped by a local resident, Nayab Sheikh, who spotted him bleeding and hiding inside the guards’ booth while returning home from work.
Sheikh immediately took Sen to the police station and later ensured he was shifted to the hospital for treatment.
Police later examined nearby CCTV footage and tracked down the accused. Ansari was arrested within around 90 minutes of the attack and taken to Naya Nagar Police Station, where a case was registered against him.
He has been charged with attempted murder and promoting enmity between groups. A court in Thane has sent him to police custody till May 4.
A joint investigation by the police and the Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) is now underway. Officials are also checking mobile phones and electronic devices seized from the accused to understand whether the attack was an isolated act or linked to something larger.
Sources said handwritten notes allegedly recovered from Ansari included words such as ISIS, lone wolf, jihad and Gaza. Investigators are now looking into these details as part of the probe.
Police sources also claimed that Ansari had lived in the United States for several years before returning to India after reportedly failing to find work there. Some of his family members are still believed to be living in the US.
Authorities have appealed to people not to spread rumours or misleading information, warning that strict action will be taken against those found doing so.
