Following her complaint, Navi Mumbai Airport Police registered a case against the driver and started searching for him.
According to police, the incident took place after midnight on Saturday on a service road near the airport. The woman had gone to Chembur with her friends for a party and was returning to her home in Panvel afterwards.
One of her friends had booked an online cab for her. She was travelling alone in the back seat.
During the journey, the driver allegedly stopped the cab on the roadside, claiming that he wanted to drink water. He then reportedly moved to the back seat and went close to the woman.
The woman has alleged that the driver held her hand and tried to misbehave with her clothes.
The sudden incident left the woman frightened. She started shouting for help and tried to protect herself. With no one around to help at the time, she eventually managed to get out of the cab.
She then contacted her family and informed them about what had happened.
The woman initially went to Panvel Police Station to file a complaint. Police later found that the location where the alleged incident took place fell under the jurisdiction of Navi Mumbai Airport Police Station. She was subsequently taken there by the Panvel police.
Based on her complaint, a case was registered against the cab driver, Mohammed Afzal Sheikh.
Police have started looking for the accused. Investigators are checking details related to the online cab booking, the vehicle, the route taken and other available technical evidence.
Police are also examining the woman’s complaint and other information to establish exactly what happened during the journey.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of women passengers travelling by cab at night, particularly in and around the Navi Mumbai Airport area.
The accused driver has not yet been arrested. Police are continuing their investigation and efforts to trace him.
