Mumbai Metro 5 Extension to Ulhasnagar: Mumbai’s Metro Line 5, which connects Thane, Bhiwandi and Kalyan, is set to be extended up to Ulhasnagar. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has invited tenders for the construction of three sections of the extended route. Construction is expected to begin in early 2027, after the tender process is completed.

The three sections are Dhamankar Naka to Durgadi (Phase 2), Durgadi to Kalyan (Phase 3), and Bhoirwadi to Ulhasnagar (Phase 5A). MMRDA officials said the tender process is expected to be completed in early 2027, allowing work on all three sections to begin soon afterwards.

Metro 5’s first phase nearing completion

The original 24.9-km Metro 5 corridor between Thane, Bhiwandi and Kalyan was planned at an estimated cost of ₹8,400 crore. Its construction was divided into two phases.

Work on the first phase, from Kapurbawdi to Dhamankar Naka, is currently 98% complete. After construction is finished and the required safety certification is received, this section is expected to become operational in early 2027.

Revised route alignment

The extension plans have undergone several changes. The earlier plan included an elevated route between Durgadi and Kalyan. However, rehabilitation and resettlement issues along the proposed Phase 2 route led to a decision to convert this section into an underground corridor.

Following further directions from the state government, MMRDA revised the alignment again. Under the revised plan, the extension will be developed in three sections: Dhamankar Naka to Durgadi, Durgadi to Kalyan, and Bhoirwadi to Ulhasnagar.

The revised alignment received approval from the Maharashtra government and was subsequently cleared by the Centre. A notification related to the extension was issued in August, paving the way for the project to move forward.

Length and estimated cost of the three sections
– Phase 2 – Dhamankar Naka to Durgadi: 10.48 km, with six stations. The estimated cost is ₹7,326 crore.
– Phase 3 – Durgadi to Kalyan: 11.82 km, with seven stations. The estimated cost is ₹4,063 crore.
– Phase 5A – Bhoirwadi to Ulhasnagar: 5.27 km.
Interested companies can submit their bids by December 2. MMRDA plans to complete the tender process in early 2027 and begin construction shortly afterwards.

Once completed, the extended Metro 5 corridor is expected to improve connectivity between Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar, making daily travel faster and more convenient for residents.
